The Power of Storytelling-Creating and devising around Black history
What story do you want to tell, and what can Black history teach us about finding our voice?
Black History is worldwide and more than just a month. In this engaging 4-day course, we will explore the lives and legacies of pioneers such as Kathleen Wrsama, Mary Seacole and Ottobah Cugoano through drama, poetry and creative writing.
Discover how their stories connect to themes of identity, resilience, community and belonging today. Working in a relaxed, supportive and non-judgemental environment, participants will create poems, personal reflections, short stories and performance pieces inspired by Black history and their own experiences.
No previous writing or drama experience is needed-everyone's voice is welcome. We will also visit the Victoria and Albert Museum East to see The Music is Black: A British Story, 125 years of Black music-making in Britain and Museum of the Home's West Indian Front Room exhibit, bringing the Black British immigrant experience to life and inspiring further discussion and creativity.
Participants will have the opportunity to contribute work to the Camden Summer University Black History Calendar 2027 and receive a free copy.
